BAIKAL FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

Many Russian traditional festivals, cultural events and spectacular sport
competitions are held in Irkutsk and at Baikal lake every year. Summer or Winter thousands of Russians take part
in the selebrations and try to make a great fun out of winter sports, traditional festivals and enjoy the state holidays. There are also several traditional
Buryat festivals, such as Sagaalgan, Altargana, Surkharban, Jerdynskie Games in Olkhon area held annualy, when both Buryats
and Russians solemnize together.
THE MOST POPULAR BAIKAL FESTIVALS AND EVENTS:
Every March the International Baikal Nordic games Festival - ZIMNIADA is held in Irkutsk. Since 2003
the festival includes cultural events, meetings, Russian and Buryat traditional selebrations, outdoor challenges and many sport competitions, such as
ski mass start "The Russian Piste", Baikal Ice Marathon etc. The "Farewell to the Winter"
traditional orthodox festival is held in Wooden Architecture Museum.
Buryats - indigenous population of Irkutsk region. In 2006 the delegation of region for
the first time participated in the international Buryat national festival "Altargana - 2006"
in the city Ulan-Ude, where the banner of festival was officially transmitted to Irkutsk
region. The resolution of the forum of the Buryat people of Baikal region by one of the
basic directions determined preparation and conducting of international Buryat national
festival "Altargana - 2008". On 12 February, 2007, by the governor of region A.G. By Tishaninym
was signed order about the conducting in 2008 of the international Buryat national
festival Of "Altargana-2008" in Irkutsk region.
A unique astronomical phenomenon will take place on the territory of Russia on the 1st August 2008.
The total eclipse with a width of about 250 km will cross the Western Siberia from the north to the south, then will cross the Altai Mountains and will go further to the difficult to access regions of China and Mongolia.
The maximum eclipse will be at 16:21:08 local time, when the maximum time of the total phase will last just under 2:27 minutes in Nizhnevartovsk, 2:20 min in Novosibirsk and 2:14 min in the Altai region.
