The most famous summer running marathon at Lake Baikal is held annually on the first Sunday of June in the settlement Listvyanka. The story of the competition started back in the 80-s, the Soviet time, when the government encouraged people to play sports, especially athletics. The Baikalskiy Marathon is the sport season earliest summer long distance run in Irkutsk.
Now the race is popular with the regional long distance runners. Among the participants there are runners from Angarsk, Bratsk, Shelekhov, Ust-Ilimsk, Irkutsk who were called to the Russian National athletics team. The race starts from Listvyanka, gets along the main road towards Irkutsk for 21 km and turns back to Baikal. Young sportsmen and marathon beginners can take 10 or 20 kilometers
